The Philippine Skating Union (PSU) has achieved another first in the history of ice skating by qualifying an athlete to the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games.
Julian Macaraeg, a 14-year-old New York-based skater earned a YOG berth Tuesday at the ISU Junior World Short Track Championships in Montreal, Canada.
Macaraeg’s Ukrainian coach confirmed the report that the Pinoy skater met the 42-seconds qualifying time in the 500 meters.
Also, Macaraeg emerged as the best Southeast Asian skater in both the 500 and 1,000 meter qualifications. Martin also added that Macaraeg’s good showing likewise surged the Pinoy to Number 42 in the World Junior ranking.
Another speed short track skater Marc Gonzales, who also competed in Montreal, will try to qualify in forthcoming Junior Grand Prix events alongside the country’s figure skaters.
Michael Martinez and Switzerland-based Abel Tesfamariam represented the Philippines for the first time in the 2011 Winter Youth Games in Innsbuck, Austria. Martinez competed in figure skating while Tesfamariam in Alpine Skiing.
The Winter Youth Olympic Games is set January 9-22 2020 in Lausanne, Switzerland.
