The doubles pair of Macaranas and Fuentes bagged a silver and a bronze medals at the 2018 Asian Under 23 Canoe Championships in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

Amidst the freezing weather, the Filipino pair didn’t back down and triumphed over some of the region’s best paddlers by placing third in the 1,000 meters on the first day of the competition.

Host Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan pocketed the gold and silver medals.

Overwhelmed by the unexpected bronze, Macaranas and Fuentes were more inspired in their favorite event – the 200m Canoe Doubles – where they almost upset the Asian Games medalist from Kazakhstan if not for the footrest malfunction.

With the 200m being their pet event, the pair clinched the silver medal to complete history for the Philippines which one medals for the first time in the Asian competition after 16 years.

The 22-year-old Macaranas and the 21-year-old Fuentes placed fifth in the Canoe Men’s Doubles of the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia.
