Nikko Huelgas, being a multi-titled triathlete, is juggling his time training on a daily basis and attending his volunteer chores as chairman of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) Athlete’s Commission.
The Athletes Commission serves as the “voice” of the Filipino national athletes.
“I hope more sports leaders would come and join us (in the commission). We certainly have to be replaced by the new ones,” said Huelgas, gold medalist in the men’s triathlon of the 2017 Kuala Lumpur Southeast Asian Games.
Huelgas led the recent 2019 National Athletes Forum, which was attended by 68 athletes-representatives from various National Sports Associations (NSAs), along with fellow Athletes Commission members Francesca Altomonte of softball, James delos Santos of weightlifting and Hidilyn Diaz of weightlifting.
Huelgas said from four, he would recommend to make it to a six-man commission to welcome and harness more leaders that will take the cudgel for their fellow athletes.
He said his dream legacies for his fellow athletes is to register the group with the Securities and Exchange Commission as a non-stock, non-profit organization.
“Pag nangyari yan, we will have millions of donations that could help fund our projects. So we want to make it fast, lahat ito para sa atleta, madali na ang goal-setting and we’re happy that POC is there to support us.”
Huelgas will attend the World Athletes forum in April at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, joining 204 other Athletes Commission heads all over the world.
“I want to make our country proud in that meeting but of course the more important thing is we will meet with other leaders-athletes and communicate and share ideas with them.”
