15th Asian Senior Men's Volleyball Championship & 8th Asian Volleyball Confederation General Assembly

In a serious bid to bring back the glory days of the sport of volleyball in the Philippines, a major event ranging the country’s best male spikers against some of the world’s top volleyball squads is set to be staged in Manila on September 26 to October 5, 2009.

Dubbed 15th Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship, the biennial competition is the biggest men’s volleyball sporting event in the continent where only the finest international players will participate.  It will serve as the Asian qualifying tournament for the 2009 FIVB Grand Champions Cup Volleyball Championship.

As the site of the prestigious global event, the Philippines shall also be hosting the 8th Asian Volleyball Confederation General Assembly where all the volleyball leaders from 63 countries in the continent will converge to discuss the future of the sport in Asia.

The two events, while primarily aimed at infusing blood to Philippine volleyball, also seek to promote the country to the world as a prime tourist destination.  Apart from attracting the participation of 63 nations, local and international media networks will be tapped to cover the competitions, providing the Philippines global exposure for the entirety of the tournament.

The ASMVC and AVC General Assembly are being projected to create ripples in the National Government’s tourism-promotion efforts as huge tourist arrivals are expected during and after the said events.

Comprising the list of teams participating in the ASMVC are Australia, Bahrain, China, Chinese-Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Kuwait, Philippines, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Vietnam.

The Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) the national governing body of volleyball in the country hosted the Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) Volleyball Cooperation Program (VCP) International Referee Course held last May 6-11, 2008 at Bengued State University in Baguio City.

The FIVB-VCP International Referee Course is a six (6) days technical development program being sponsored by the FIVB, the world governing organization of volleyball that aimed to target teachers in the country side to be trained the basics of volleyball officiating. It also taught the latest trends and rules on volleyball.

at Benguet State University, La Trinidad, Benguet Province

Mr. Somsak Chareonpong from Thailand Volleyball Association, a license FIVB Referee Instructor and a veteran International Referee conducted the said volleyball activity. He was assisted by the Philippine Volleyball Federation Referees Commission Chairman, Lieutenant Vic Abalos (Ret.) through-out the duration of the course.

The PVF President, Mr. Pete Mendoza graced the Opening Ceremony which attended by the different delegates from the different parts of the Philippines e.i. Iloilo, Bacolod, Lucena and from Manila.

A total of twenty seven (27) teachers was able to graduate the Referee course and awarded FIVB certificates. They are now official referees of the Philippine Volleyball Federation.

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) supported the FIVB-VCP Programs of the Philippine Volleyball Federation.

PHILIPPINE VOLLEYBALL FEDERATION
2008 INTER-COLLEGIATE VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

The Antipolo City Volleyball Association (ACVA), through its President Businessman Gener M. Dungo, hosted the 2008 PVF Inter-Collegiate Volleyball Championship held last  May 17-23, 2008 at Philsport Arena and Rizal Technological University in Mandaluyong City.

The activity is an annual volleyball championship of the PVF that is part of the grass-roots development program aimed to create opportunity for students to showcase and enhance their volleyball skills and abilities. It will also give way for talent identification to be considered in the National Youth Volleyball Team.

A total of twenty two (2) colleges and universities participated in this collegiate based volleyball tournament. Heading the list is the De La Salle University – Taft, University of Santo Tomas, University of the Philippines, Adamson University, Rizal Technological University, University of Perpetual Help System – Laguna, University of the Cordilleras, Nueva Viscaya State University, National College of Business and Arts, Ateneo De Manila University, University of the East, St. Louis University – Baguio.

The City Government of Antipolo City, headed by its sports minded Mayor Victor R. Sumulong and Mr. LJ Sumulong the Mayor’s Chief of Staff gave their full support on this undertaking.

Aside from bragging rights as best collegiate volleyball teams, winners will get trophies and cash prizes. The Champion teams will win Php 20,000.00, 2nd place 10,000.00 and 3rd place 5,000.00.
